Formazione avanzata nello studio dei tessili antichi
A3TEX promuove la ricerca e la formazione specialistica sulla cultura tessile attraverso workshop e scuole di alta formazione rivolte a studiosi, conservatori e specialisti del settore.
L’International Workshop (Padova, 20-21 febbraio 2025) riunisce esperti di fama internazionale per approfondire lo studio, la digitalizzazione e l’archeometria dei tessuti antichi nell’ambito del progetto ADigTex.
La Training School (Pompei, 15-18 aprile 2024), organizzata in collaborazione con EuroWeb e la Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, offre un’esperienza formativa intensiva sulla conservazione e lo studio dei tessuti mineralizzati, con lezioni teoriche e attività pratiche sul campo.

Training School
On handling, studying and documenting mineralized textiles: Mineralized textiles from Pompeii as a case study

EuroWeb, in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome and the Pompeii Archaeological Superintendence, offers a four-day training on identifying, handling, and studying mineralized textiles. The program aims to equip archaeologists and conservators, especially from ITC countries, with essential skills for preserving this valuable textile heritage.

Description
EuroWeb, in collaboration with the Sapienza University of Rome and the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei, is organizing a four-day training school on mineralized textiles, seeking to introduce the participants to the identification, handling and study of textiles preserved on metal objects. Textiles preserved on metal artefacts represent a category of items that frequently appear in archaeological excavations.
Although fibre identification and technological analysis might be challenging, their preservation in sheer numbers significantly enriches the amount of information regarding the production and consumption of textiles in past times. However, without the proper knowledge of identifying, handling and studying this type of finds, much valuable information might be irremediably lost.
Thus, it would be beneficial for the preservation and study of European Textile Heritage that many more archaeologists and conservators, particularly from ITC countries where this knowledge is limited, be trained in the techniques and methods of handling the textiles preserved on metal items.
Objectives
Objective of the training school is to develop basic skills and knowledge on mineralized textiles for 10 archaeologists and conservators interested in the field, such as identification, assessment and first aid for metal artefacts with traces of textiles, distinction of textiles from other organic remains preserved on metal objects (e.g. leather, wicker, wood) and from corrosion products, the main methods of handling and study used for textiles preserved on metal artefacts.
Activities
The School will offer a combination of lectures and hands-on practice on:
- How mineralization of organic materials happens;
- The textiles and the metals specialists approach on mineralized textiles;
- Recognition and identification of mineralized textiles;
- First aid practices;
- Optimal and viable storage methods and conditions;
- Sampling and analysis of mineralized textiles.
- Documentation of mineralized textiles.
