SCIENTIFIC PROFILE
Anestis Koutsoudis is a computer scientist specialising in 3D computer graphics, digitisation, and cultural heritage applications. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Computer Studies (Visualisation) from the University of Derby, an MSc in Multimedia Technology from the University of Bath, and a PhD in 3D content-based retrieval and MPEG-7 metadata from Democritus University of Thrace.
He began his career in software engineering and computer graphics, serving as head of IT at Channel 6 – Radio Television SA. Since 2006, he has been with Athena Research and Innovation Centre, where he is now a research director and head of the Clepsydra digitisation lab.
For over two decades, he has led and contributed to numerous national and EU-funded R&D projects focused on 3D graphics, automated 3D digitisation, VR, HCI, multimedia technologies, and IT applications in cultural heritage and education.
He actively reviews for international scientific journals and conferences, serves on editorial boards, and participates in scientific committees. He has taught in the University of the Aegean’s postgraduate program in Applied Archaeological Sciences and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research.
Anestis is a senior member of the IEEE Computer Society, a member of ISPRS, the Hellenic Informatics Union, and a founding member of the Athena RC Researchers Association. He is also listed in evaluator and expert registers for GSRI, ELIDEK, and the Fund for Scientific Research.

LABORATORIES DESCRIPTION
Clepsydra was founded in 2006 as a research and development initiative and operates within the Athena Research and Innovation Centre in Xanthi, Greece. The lab specialises in the digitisation, archiving, visualisation, management, and dissemination of cultural heritage assets. Its interdisciplinary team of researchers and specialists develop cutting-edge methods and technologies for 2D/3D digitisation, digital replica generation, 3D reconstruction, shape analysis, and interactive dissemination through VR, AR, and Web applications.
With a strong infrastructure that includes commercial and in-house developed digitisation systems—ranging from 3D laser scanning and terrestrial LIDAR to multispectral imaging—Clepsydra has contributed to major digitisation projects, including UNESCO-listed monuments, archaeological sites, and historical urban environments. Additionally, the lab offers bespoke software solutions and experimental hardware development, advancing cultural heritage documentation and preservation through automation, machine learning, and interactive technologies.
