Shaheen Islam

Islam Shaheen is a PhD student at La Sapienza University of Rome, Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, Department of Ancient Sciences, where he is conducting research on the textile collection of Tutankhamun. He is also a conservation scientist at the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Shaheen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology from Cairo University in May 2009. In December 2020, he completed his Laurea Magistrale in Archaeological Materials Science (Erasmus Mundus Joint Master) from La Sapienza University of Rome.

Shaheen specializes in archaeological materials, particularly textiles, and is recognized as a pioneer in Egypt for implementing and teaching advanced documentation and imaging techniques in cultural heritage. His expertise includes multispectral imaging (MSI), photogrammetry, Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), and X-ray radiography. Additionally, he has extensive experience with analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Shaheen has delivered scientific lectures and training sessions internationally.

He has published three articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and co-authored one book (under press). Shaheen has contributed to seven research projects in various roles. He has been awarded nine grants (academic and scientific) and received one award for his contributions to the field of conservation. Shaheen’s research focuses on the archaeological and scientific study of textiles emphasizing the integration of advanced scientific analysis techniques
