I miei principali ambiti di interesse sono le applicazioni di tecnologie e strumenti digitali al processo di documentazione, analisi e pubblicazione dei contesti archeologici, con attenzione particolare a standard e tecnologie Web. Nello specifico mi sono a lungo occupato di banche dati e sistemi informativi collaborativi di supporto alla documentazione archeologica e alla strutturazione di piattaforme GIS, sia con strumenti desktop che web-based. Queste sono anche le attività principali del LAD: Laboratorio di Archeologia Digitale alla Sapienza che dirigo dal 2021.
Inoltre, sempre dal 2021, dirigo la missione archeologica della Sapienza in Albania, dove indaghiamo il sito fortificato di Çuka e Ajtoit in Epiro, non lontano dal sito di Butrinto (Patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’UNESCO) e di fronte alla città di Corcira. Il sito presenta importanti fasi di età ellenistica, che comprendono il sistema di fortificazione e numerose unità abitative, nonché un’importante ripresa di età medievale, probabilmente tardo-bizantina. Le nostre ricerche sul campo stanno portando alla luce altre fasi cronologiche del sito e un suo nuovo inquadramento nel panorama storico-archeologico della regione. Il lavoro sul campo vede il connubio tra metodologie tradizionali e applicazioni tecnologiche avanzate, nello spirito del LAD.

My main areas of interest are the application of digital technologies and tools to the process of documenting, analyzing, and publishing archaeological contexts, with a focus on web standards and technologies. In particular, I have long been involved in collaborative databases and information systems to support archaeological documentation and the structuring of GIS platforms, both with desktop and web-based tools. These are also the main activities of the LAD: Laboratory of Digital Archaeology at Sapienza, which I have been directing since 2021.

Also since 2021, I have been directing the Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Albania, where we are investigating the fortified site of Çuka and Ajtoit in Epirus, not far from the site of Butrint (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and opposite the city of Corcyra. The site has important Hellenistic phases, including the fortification system and numerous residential units, as well as an important medieval, probably late Byzantine, revival. Our fieldwork is bringing to light other chronological phases of the site and its new framing in the historical-archaeological landscape of the region. The fieldwork will combine traditional methods with advanced technological applications, in the spirit of the LAD.
